Saving Money and Enabling Innovation with VMWare and The Cloud

By Erik Benner March 27, 2024

On November 21st, Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMWare for over 60 billion dollars, with the goal to significantly grow VMWare’s revenue. Since then, there have been many changes, with Broadcom moving VMWare licenses to an expensive subscription-only model, selling off parts of the company, and a complete restructuring of their partner system, eliminating many of the partners that support our shared customers. This is a lot of change, but there are also some good things, as VMWare is still a powerful hypervisor with a ton of automation built into the technology.

The challenge for our customers is what to do with the new expenses and the uncertainty of the partner support. While some customers are moving off of VMWare to open-source technologies like OLVM, many still see value in staying on VMWare. VMWare as a technology is still a solid technology, with Broadcom stating that they plan to add new features to the technology stack.

But there is still uncertainty with pricing, and for that, we have a solution. Oracle’s cloud has a great VMWare solution that has many advantages over other clouds. On the pricing side, there is the ability to lock in to a price for three years, providing some protection from future price increases and the difficulties our Public Sector customers are already having with getting quotes for annual support. There are several other financial advantages to running VMWare in OCI, like Agility, which allows you to scale your ESX servers as needed without the need to purchase more ESX licenses or fixed subscriptions.

Additionally, there are many technical advantages, like full root access to the ESX server. You also have the ability to VMotion VMs to and, more importantly, FROM the cloud! There are many more technical advantages, with some of the more important ones highlighted below.

Not only do admins have more control, but once you start leveraging OCI to run your VMWare environment, you open up an entirely new world of technologies that can help you better support your applications with lower costs. Imagine having the ability to leverage AI in your VMWare host applications or being able to migrate your database workloads to fully manage database PaaS offerings without having any performance impact.

There is so much more to learn about what has happened, and we will cover all of this in an upcoming webinar on April 23rd. You can register for the webinar here.

I look forward to helping you learn more about what is going on and having the ability to answer any questions you might have at the end of the webinar.
